Convention Updates
Members of the Flint Hills DSA met on Saturday, July 18, 2026 for the annual chapter convention, which took place at the Manhattan Public Library. The all-day event started with a welcome, introductions, and the singing the the chapter song, Bloom Red and White. After a fun icebreaker, members learned about the history of the chapter and listened to a review of the growth over the past year. The chapter grew by 46 members in the last year alone.
After lunch, members took time to reflect and workshop future goals of the chapter and made decisions about changes they would like to see. This was followed by the annual review of the chapter bylaws and then the election of a new steering committee and two new chapter grievance officers, as pictured above.

Chapter General Body Meetings
Chapter general body meetings will now take place on the second Monday of each month. This is a change from the second Thursday of each month.
The next Chapter Body Meeting will take place on August 10, 2026 at 6pm. Contact the Steering Committee if you would like something added to the meeting agenda.
Club Comrade
Club Comrade, which will replace Chips and Chill at Mi Tierra. Comrade Club will take place on the first and third Mondays of each month from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Manhattan Public Library Collaboration Room. Bring your latest book, crafts, your to-do list, a board game, yourself, and a friend and join your comrades for a low-stakes hangout session.
The next one will be on August 3, 2026 at 6pm at the Manhattan Public Library in the Collaboration Room.
Political Education
The People’s Free School
Comrade Derron has been building an open source model for community political education, hosted on Github, and is looking for chapter members (RSVP) who are interested in participating in a study circle.
The People’s Free School is an open, adoptable model for collective adult political education. It draws on the folk school tradition of Myles Horton and the critical pedagogy of Paulo Freire. There are no professors and no students in the usual sense. Everyone in the room is both a learner and a teacher. The curriculum is shaped by the people who show up.
Book Club
We will pick up the Book Club in August. We have moved from Bookclubs.com to Fable, which is app-based. Join us on Fable and suggest a book before the end of the week. We will vote on the book and decide a day and time to discuss it in August.
Volunteer Opportunities
Everybody Counts
There may be an opportunity to volunteer to help with setup or cleanup at the Everybody Counts community event that is taking place Saturday, August 1, 2026. We will send updated information when we find out what their needs are.
Common Table
Common Table serves dinner every night, 365 days of the year. They are always looking for volunteers to help in providing this service. Consider signing up to volunteer.
